Marty Coulter Workshop

 Plein Air Without Brushes

We will explore the use of the palette knife as a quick and less wasteful alternative to painting with brushes.  I’ll include a copy of my new 9-page booklet ‘Outdoor Painting Simplified’ as a gift to each of my students to be sent prior to the start of the workshop. I’m glad to accept all skill levels in oil and acrylic . Hours will be 9:00-4:30 both days with an hour break for lunch when I’ll paint a demo.

I’ll discuss methods, materials, subject selection, sketching, composition, value, perspective and color in the mornings both days. The afternoons are for the students to paint on location. We’ll review and critique their work from 4:00-4:30. I’ll be using oil with three primaries and white, sketching in grey markers on 3×5 cards and using vine charcoal to layout on gessoed birch panels. I use a 1” Liquitex FreeStyle palette knife. Students can bring supplies they already have, but may choose materials I specify in my booklet.
