Workshop – Paul Schaefer – DESIGN vs COMPOSITION
Many paintings fail not because of color, detail, or brushwork, but
because the design was never decided. Understanding the difference
between design and composition, you will learn to move beyond just
copying what you see, toward designing what you paint.
In this Plein Air workshop, we’ll focus on the two most critical
elements of a successful painting. Design and Value. When those are
solid, everything else falls into place. A strong design can survive
imperfect drawing or color. But a week design cannot be saved by
just adding more detail.
You’ll learn how to identify strong shapes, organize space and
create a visual hierarchy that guides the viewer’s eye. We’ll talk
about what to include, what to leave out, and why restraint is often
your best tool.
